She can power a laser, but can’t be told not to lick a battery. This character would be nothing more than The Ditz , except they have one area of expertise in which no one can beat them. When that skill or talent is needed, they suddenly switch gears from airheadedness to hyper-competency. Sometimes they don’t even know that they’re doing it.
Genius Ditz is closely related to Idiot Savant. An extreme form may border on The Rain Man.

Did he just say “revenge is a dish best served cold” in Klingon? What is wrong with him? Everyone has a different theory No reasons are given for the strange behaviour. No specific diagnosis is ever mentioned in the story. In fact, any resemblance to any real disorder is likely accidental; the character’s symptoms are exactly those symptoms the writer wants them to have.
It is a case of Ambiguous Disorder. The disordered behaviour will often be Played for Laughs. This technique is generally used to avoid writing yet another Patient of the Week story about some specific disorder and to focus on the laugh-producing elements without having to deal with the serious issues. Or, less generously, to mock the kooky outer aspects of mental illness without the risk of getting angry letters. In the instances where this trope is played seriously, the character usually overlaps with The Spock , Pinocchio Syndrome , or Tin Man and focus on this character’s struggle to befriend people or otherwise fit into society.
A lot of mentally ill people in classical literature, especially from the 19th century and earlier, tend to be this; psychiatry was a very young field back then and, until a certain point in history, didn’t exist at all , and so there was no manual to turn to if you wanted to give your character odd quirks.

I could not follow. Instead she found out she had attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD. Fields is now 66 years old and lives in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. She’s a former secretary and mother of two grown children. Fields was diagnosed with ADHD about eight years ago. Her doctor ruled out any physical problems and suggested she see a psychiatrist.
Could someone you know have ADHD? Maybe they’re inattentive. Or they might be hyperactive and impulsive. They might have all those traits. You might not notice it until a child goes to school. In.
ADHD could be to blame. The condition starts in childhood, but it can stay into adulthood. And if you have it, it could be causing relationship problems. Learn the red flags and what to do about them. Do the following complaints sound familiar to you? On the other hand, you might feel like they’re nagging you. Household chores can be a challenge when you have adult ADHD. When was the last time you took out the trash? Is your clutter taking over the house?
Your family members may be doing more than their fair share of keeping the household running smoothly. But then you got distracted at work, and your cell phone rang, and then you realized you needed to pick up the dry cleaning. And before you knew it, the game was over — and you were in the dog house. And that can lead to major problems in relationships. A common ADHD symptom is doing things on impulse, and that includes buying things.
Life with Aspergers: Are Aspies Capable of Love
For me, this became almost an integral part of my personality and how people saw me. Great gal, horrible taste in men. I used to joke that if there was one unemployed, drug-addicted, criminally inclined asshat in a crowded room of wonderful, caring, loving men….
By Leslie Rouder, LCSW. The challenges facing a person who is married to someone with untreated ADD can certainly be difficult to navigate, especially because these challenges may be completely hidden to the rest of the world.
Having a hard time waiting to talk or react Continued Have a hard time waiting for their turn. Blurt out answers before someone finishes asking them a question. Frequently interrupt or intrude on others. This often happens so much that it causes problems in social or work settings. Start conversations at inappropriate times. Impulsivity can lead to accidents, like knocking over objects or banging into people. Children with ADHD may also do risky things without stopping to think about the consequences.
For instance, they may climb and put themselves in danger. Many of these symptoms happen from time to time in all youngsters. But in children with the disorder they happen a lot — at home and school, or when visiting with friends. They also mess with the child’s ability to function like other children who are the same age or developmental level.

My personal opinion is that they all shared a problem with focus. For example, many other researchers have pointed out that you can expect an ADHD kid to have trouble even staying on the piano bench, because they are so hyperactive and scattered. After sixty seconds of application he would literally hurtle himself around the room like a rag doll filled with firecrackers, seeking an outlet for the immense energy within him. My solution was to create that outlet for him.
I would play if necessary for several minutes, until he was more or less physically exhausted. The value of the outlet games for him was that he knew there was an approved place for him to go when the energy inside him became too great. This release from the energy gave him the freedom to exercise his intellect, for however brief a time he could manage. Luckily, his parents, both doctors, were not in a hurry, and after a year, we began to notice him transposing, a skill that even professionals sometimes have trouble with.
Transposing is the ability to play a piano piece not just on the standard starting key, but any starting key. He never failed, after a little trial and error.

And if it’s okay, how much can you safely have? There’s no official recommendation, because not enough research has been done. But some doctors think a drink or two is all right for some people under certain circumstances. It depends on the person, the type of medication they take, and when they took it last. The two types of drugs that treat ADHD — stimulants and nonstimulants — mix differently with alcohol.
The Aspie Quiz was recently updated to Final Version 3, which is a major update, so I thought it would be a good idea to retake it. Much of what’s changed is behind the scenes refinement of the test items and won’t be evident to the average test taker.
He was diagnosed about 7 or 8 years ago, on meds for a while then we just ignored the problem thinking it would go away. Three years ago I left after a very bad manic episode and he would not seek any professional help. When I said I was leaving it turned into an even worse episode that landed him in jail for a DUI I think he was trying to kill himself with the use of the car.
I left for two months and he did everything right. Got help, swore he would stay on meds, let me have my freedom, etc. I thought I had to give it another shot for the man I loved, our dogs, cat and the life we had built together. I returned and we went to counseling and he saw his own doctor. They put him on Lithium and I started to think we may make it after all.
So the cycle goes on, the snake eating its own tail. By last week, it felt like I was just hanging on for dear life. Predominantly Inattentive Type 2: Predominantly Hyperactive Type 3:
